A day meant for leisure turned tragic at the Jai Malhar Agro Tourism Centre’s water park in Morachi Chincholi of Shirur village in Maharashtra’s Pune district, where alleged negligence by the management led to a devastating accident that has left a 37-year-old woman permanently paralysed.
The victim, Ashwini Sandeep Napte, a resident of Karandi, had visited the water park with her family for a holiday. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred in the afternoon while she was descending a water slide. The water level at the slide’s exit was reportedly too low to provide adequate cushioning, causing her to hit the ground with severe force and lose consciousness on the spot.
The impact resulted in critical spinal injuries. Doctors
later confirmed that four of her spinal vertebrae were fractured, leaving the lower half of her body permanently paralysed.
The incident has raised serious questions about safety standards at the water park. Relatives alleged that despite being a major tourist destination, the water park lacked basic emergency medical infrastructure, including an on-site ambulance. Following the accident, family members were forced to arrange a private ambulance to rush her to hospital.
The episode triggered widespread anger in the region, with locals demanding accountability. Based on a complaint filed by Kiran Napte, Shirur police have registered a case against the owner and management of the tourism centre for alleged negligence.
Family members have called for strict action against establishments that, they claim, compromise visitor safety in pursuit of profit. They also alleged that no safety instructions, supervision, or precautionary measures were in place at the time of the incident.
