US President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed once again that the war with Iran will end soon, even as fighting and tensions across the region continue, as reported by Al Arabiya English.
Trump’s latest remarks come as the wider regional situation remains tense. He also said the Houthis do not want to fight with the US, while adding that Iran was “probably” responsible for the Saudi pipeline attack.
Trump Had Earlier Given Different Timeline
Trump had earlier said he expected the war to end “immediately after” the US midterm elections on November 3. He said Iran would not be able to continue the conflict for much longer.
On September 10, Trump also said the conflict could end shortly after the election, although he left open the possibility that it could happen sooner.
His latest statement
that the war will end “very soon” therefore comes without a confirmed timeline or a publicly announced ceasefire.
Strait Of Hormuz Remains Key Flashpoint
The latest developments show that the conflict is still affecting vital regional trade and energy routes. Iran has continued to challenge US efforts around the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington has been redirecting commercial vessels travelling through the area.
Shipping traffic through the strait has fallen sharply, raising concerns about global oil supplies. Brent crude has also moved above $100 a barrel amid fears of further disruption.
Regional Crisis Deepens
The wider conflict has also spread beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation. Iran-backed Houthi forces have seized territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including the strategically important Perim Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has suspended its East-West oil pipeline after a drone attack, adding further pressure to regional energy supplies. The pipeline normally provides an alternative route for Saudi oil that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite Trump’s latest prediction, major issues between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved, including Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and the future of the Strait of Hormuz. The latest developments indicate that the conflict remains volatile even as Trump says its end is near.
