Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to rewrite history. The teenage batting sensation has hit the headlines again with a quick half-century for East Zone in their Duleep Trophy 2026 semifinal clash with Central Zone, currently underway in Bengaluru.

Sooryavanshi reached his fifty with a six, taking 42 deliveries to the milestone, and with that, broke a 57-year-old record.

At 15 years and 175 days, the left-handed opener has become the youngest batter in Duleep Trophy’s history to score a half-century. He surpassed the previous record of 16 years and 23 days by the late Laxman Singh, who did that in 1969.

On Day 1, Sooryavanshi led East Zone for some time after their captain Ishan Kishan had to leave the field, having

been struck on his right wrist. The teenager captained the team for nearly an hour, during which he also took a successful DRS review.

In the quarterfinal, Sooryavanshi was dismissed cheaply but made an impact with his left-arm spin bowling during East Zone’s innings win over North East Zone.

He bowled three overs and took wickets while conceding 11 runs.

“If you ask any batter, he enjoys bowling as well, or vice versa with the bowler; they like to bat. Both enjoy doing the other a lot,” Sooryavanshi later said in a video shared by the BCCI.

“The wicket wasn’t falling and I was asked to bowl 2-3 overs. Ishan bhaiya felt that he was taking some risk in asking me to bowl, but he did not know that I am a wicket-taker,” he said, having dismissed Kishan Lyngdoh (25) and Imliwati Lemtur (4) in an over.

“The only thing I had in my mind was even if I take five wickets here, I would only get three overs to bowl, so I tried to bowl my best, tried to bowl at the same spot and finish my spell,” Sooryavanshi concluded.
