The sudden death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has left fans across India and beyond heartbroken. The singer, known for his soulful voice and chart-topping song Ya Ali, passed away at the age of 52 in a scuba diving accident in Singapore last week.
Amid the sorrow, the late singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, had shared a heartfelt message urging calm, unity, and respect during his final journey, while also appealing for the withdrawal of all FIRs filed in connection with the incident.
Garima’s Appeal
She had absolved the singer’s manager, Siddharth Sarma, and others who were being blamed for Zubeen’s death by many. In a video message, she stated how Siddharth was not merely a colleague but family, someone Zubeen himself would never have allowed to
be maligned.
Garima had also recalled Sarma’s assistance during difficult times, including Zubeen’s severe seizure in 2020 and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Zubeen has always been our own, and whenever anyone spoke against Siddharth, Zubeen always stood by him. Please allow Siddharth to be part of Zubeen’s final journey. I request everyone to set aside any negative thoughts about Siddharth. I need all my people around me tomorrow, and I will need Siddharth’s support, without him, I cannot do anything.”
She also appealed to authorities and the public to withdraw all FIRs filed against Siddharth, “Zubeen has many unfinished tasks, and I cannot complete them alone. I also request that all FIRs filed against Siddharth be withdrawn.”
How Siddharth’s Name Came Up?
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to perform at a three-day cultural festival showcasing North East India on the global stage. Tragically, he passed away just a day before his scheduled performance in a scuba diving incident.
The news of his death came as a shock to millions of people in Assam. Many people on social media began questioning those who were with Zubeen, including his manager. People also accused his manager and acquaintances of negligence, given the singer’s health condition and a history of seizures.
However, in response to growing suspicions of foul play or negligence, Garima appealed for calm and urged authorities and the public to withdraw all FIRs filed against him.
People Troll Garima
However, a section of people began trolling Garima with disrespectful and sexist remarks. Garima’s appeal for calm became a matter of suspicion, and some netizens turned their doubts towards her, India Today reported.
Many people on social media started accusing her of focusing on defending others instead of mourning her husband. One person questioned why she was even speaking publicly so soon after his death, calling her actions “fishy” and suggesting a grieving wife wouldn’t behave that way.
Others went a step further and blamed Garima directly for not protecting her husband.
One user wrote, “Listen, if she knows a wife, why didn’t she declare him not to go to water or didn’t say to anyone that don’t let him go into the sea? And why didn’t she allow at least a nurse or doctor with him if she knows every detail of her husband?”
Fans Come To Her Rescue
After Garima was heavily criticised online, Zubeen’s supporters have now come to her defense. They’re calling for accountability and punishment for those who attacked her.
“Those attempting to defame Garima Garg should be prepared to face legal consequences. Since 1994, Garima Garg has been a constant presence alongside Zubeen garg. Criticizing her in Zubeen’s brief absence is unreasonable,” said a person on X.
“To those judging Garima Saikia Garg — please stop this She was not just Zubeen Garg’s wife, she was his love, his life, his constant strength. At this painful moment, what she needs is our support, not judgment. We demand a full-proof enquiry into his death so that the truth prevails and no questions remain unanswered,” wrote Punam Gogoi, former Assam Civil Services officer, on Instagram. “We also want to ensure that Garima Saikia Garg is not manipulated in her vulnerable state,” she added.
Assam Govt Orders Probe
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, saying that “no one will be spared” if found responsible.
The Chief Minister said he had held a high-level meeting with the DGP Assam Police, the ADGP (CID), senior police officials and the Chief Secretary of Assam to review developments in the case.
