Luis de la Fuente has written his name into football history.
By guiding Spain to a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, the 65-year-old became the oldest coach ever to win the men’s World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Vicente del Bosque, who led Spain to their maiden world title in 2010.
From Unknown Appointment To World Champion
When the Spanish Football Federation appointed De la Fuente in December 2022 following Luis Enrique’s departure after Spain’s Round of 16 exit in Qatar, the reaction outside Spain was largely one of surprise.
Many wondered why the federation had overlooked bigger names.
Less than four years later, that decision has been emphatically vindicated.
De la Fuente has transformed
Spain into the dominant force in international football, delivering the UEFA Nations League in 2023, UEFA Euro 2024 and now the nation’s second FIFA World Cup title.
Built From The Ground Up
Unlike many international managers, De la Fuente didn’t inherit Spain’s golden generation, but rather helped create it.
Having spent more than a decade within Spain’s youth system, he won the UEFA Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the UEFA Under-21 Championship in 2019 before guiding Spain to Olympic silver at the delayed Tokyo Games.
Along the way, he coached many of the players who would later become the backbone of Spain’s World Cup-winning side, including Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, Mikel Merino and Unai Simón.
That familiarity convinced the Spanish federation to promote from within after the 2022 World Cup rather than appoint an established club manager.
A Place Among Football’s Elite
Sunday’s victory elevated De la Fuente into rare company.
In the space of just three and a half years, he has won the Nations League, the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup — an international treble achieved by very few coaches in football history.
The triumph also carried a touch of irony.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni, who watched his side fall short in the final, had previously attended a UEFA coaching course under De la Fuente in Spain.
