Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that public service is the ultimate measure of good governance, stressing that humility, dedication and a strong sense of duty are essential to earning the trust of the people.
The remarks came in a post on X as PM Modi officially became India’s longest continuously serving Prime Minister, surpassing the record of 4,398 consecutive days in office held by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after the first general election.
As he crossed the 4,399-day mark in office, PM Modi used the occasion to reiterate a message centred on public service, humility and commitment to the welfare of citizens.
Sharing a Sanskrit shloka on the occasion, PM Modi highlighted the virtues of selfless service and commitment
to public welfare.
“Public service is the greatest measure of good governance. It is only the individual who works tirelessly with humility, dedication, and a sense of duty who earns the trust of the people,” the Prime Minister mentioned in his post in Hindi.
He further wrote, “One who is devoted by nature, ever intent on the welfare of his subjects. A king with a humble soul indeed attains the highest glory.”
PM Modi also shared a translation of the Sanskrit verse, stating, “Public service is the biggest test of good governance. Only a person who works continuously with humility, dedication and dutifulness earns public trust.”
The Sanskrit shloka posted by the Prime Minister read, “Sadanuraktprakritih prajapalantatparh. Vineetatma hi Nripatirbhuyasi Shriyamashnute.”

The Prime Minister’s message came on a day that marks a significant milestone in India’s political history.
On June 10, PM Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, making him the longest continuously serving Prime Minister of the country.
The achievement has triggered congratulatory messages from leaders across India and abroad.
Former President Ram Nath Kovind described PM Modi’s 12-year tenure as a “watershed period for India since Independence.”
According to ANI, Kovind praised the Prime Minister for presenting India as the “mother of democracy” on the global stage and credited his government with overcoming what he described as an inferiority inherited from the colonial era.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also congratulated the Prime Minister, saying the achievement reflected the love, trust and support of crores of Indians.
International leaders and diplomats also joined in extending greetings.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised PM Modi’s contribution to India’s rise on the global stage, while United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the milestone was a testament to the Prime Minister’s decades of public service and leadership.
The occasion also coincides with the completion of 12 years of the Modi-led government at the Centre.
As the milestone was marked, preparations were underway for a major National Democratic Alliance (NDA) conclave at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to chair the meeting, which will be attended by Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers and senior leaders from all 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior Union ministers are also expected to participate.
Sources told ANI that the meeting agenda includes a review of flagship welfare schemes and infrastructure projects, an assessment of the ‘Viksit Bharat’ roadmap for 2047, and discussions on the evolving situation in West Asia.
