Abhishek Sharma has lit up the UAE skyline with his imperious hitting in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. His exploits at the top of the India batting order have set the base for their unbeaten run in the continental tournament as they’ve brushed aside opponents one after the other comfortably.
Among the batters who have scored at least 100 runs in the ongoing competition, only Abhishek has a strike-rate of over 200-plus. In four matches, the opener has scored 173 runs while averaging 43.25 with a best individual score of 74.
Two-time world cup winner Yuvraj Singh is regularly cited as having played a key role in Abhishek’s development. The legendary allrounder instilled the confidence in the youngster that he can win matches for India on his own.
Abhishek’s
father Raj Kumar Sharma has credited for raising the left-handed batter’s game.
“Yuvi paaji played a big role in the upliftment of Abhishek’s game. Yuvraj is his guru, and he always shares his experience with Abhishek. If a player who has won India two World Cups on his own teaches a player who is under his tutelage, he will naturally become a top-level cricketer,” Abhishek’s father told The Times of India.
“Yuvraj’s main guru mantra to Abhishek has always been: ‘play according to the situation of the game’. He also wants Abhishek to make the match for India. His batting should be such that he plays for the team and wins games for India and not play for his individual self,” he added.
Picking the length early and incredible timing have turned Abhishek into a six-hitting machine.
“His six-hitting ability is God-gifted. He has a tremendous eye and picks up the line and length of the ball very quickly, a few seconds before any other batter. That’s why he can hit those sixes so consistently. His timing is also very natural. Whenever the ball meets his bat, the timing is so exquisite that the ball travels beyond the boundary ropes easily,” Raj said.
