The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon is returning to Ladakh in February 2027 for its fifth edition, inviting runners to take on one of the world’s most challenging high-altitude races on the frozen surface of Pangong Tso. Scheduled for February 24 and 25, the event will feature multiple race categories, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10-km run and 5-km fun run. The marathon is recognised for its high-altitude setting, with the frozen lake situated at approximately 4,273 metres above sea level.
Organised by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL), the event combines endurance running with an effort to promote winter tourism and raise awareness about climate change and the changing Himalayan environment.

2027: Dates And Race Categories
According to the official event website, the 2027 edition will feature the following races:
- Full marathon (42.195 km): February 24, 2027
- Pangong Ice Ultra (55 km): February 24, 2027
- 10-km amateur run: February 24, 2027
- Half marathon (21.1 km): February 25, 2027
- 5-km Run for Fun: February 25, 2027
The event takes place on the frozen surface of Pangong Lake, surrounded by the mountains of Ladakh. Running on ice at such an altitude presents a demanding challenge, with participants required to prepare for sub-zero temperatures, harsh winds and reduced oxygen levels.
The organisers have outlined acclimatisation and medical screening requirements for participants travelling from outside Ladakh. Runners must also bring appropriate cold-weather equipment, including thermal clothing, gloves and ice cleats.
Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon: A Look At Previous Editions
The marathon first made headlines in February 2023, when Ladakh hosted what was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s highest frozen lake half marathon. Approximately 75 runners participated in the 21.9-km race, which began in Lukung village and ended in Maan village.
The event was designed to encourage winter tourism in the region, which traditionally receives more visitors during the warmer months. It also highlighted environmental concerns surrounding the Himalayan ecosystem and the impact of climate change on glaciers and frozen landscapes.
The 2026 edition, held on February 24 and 25, featured a full marathon, a 10-km race, a half marathon and a shorter fun run. According to the Ladakh administration, 46 runners participated in the 42-km category on the first day, while 185 competed in the 10-km event.
The 2027 edition will continue this effort to bring adventure tourism to Ladakh during winter, while drawing attention to the region’s distinctive landscape and environmental challenges.
