A quiet life in West Delhi took a dramatic turn after the sudden disappearance of a 20-year-old engineering student set off a chain of events that culminated in a security breach at the Delhi Assembly and the arrest of his uncle.
Harman Singh, a BTech student living in a small rented flat in the narrow lanes of Hari Nagar, was known among friends for his disciplined routine and clear ambition of joining the Indian armed forces.
Balancing academics with physical training, he devoted his time to National Cadet Corps (NCC) activities and preparation for competitive defence entrance examinations, including the NDA, which he had attempted after Class XII.
Originally from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, Harman moved to Delhi around two years ago in pursuit
of better opportunities. His father works as a farmer, while his mother is a homemaker, and Harman is their only child.
According to a report in The Times Of India, earlier this year, in February, he shifted into a rented flat in Hari Nagar after relatives he had been staying with moved out. The move marked a step towards independence, though he remained closely connected to his family, speaking with his parents multiple times a day. He had returned to Delhi on February 2 after a visit home and moved into the new accommodation on February 14.
Friends described Harman as academically inclined and deeply committed to his goals. Alongside his studies in computer science, he actively participated in NCC training and was also a member of his college’s basketball team. He had notably been the only student from his college selected for a national NCC camp held in September, a testament to his dedication and performance. Despite his achievements, he was known to be introverted and kept a low profile in social settings.
In early March, Harman had reportedly been slightly unwell. Friends recalled that he began declining casual outings, often citing a desire to save both time and money.
In the weeks leading up to his disappearance, his attendance at college had also become irregular. While classes had reduced for a brief period, he remained absent even when sessions resumed, raising concerns in hindsight.
Harman was last seen on April 1, when he reportedly left his locality around 6:30 pm. CCTV footage later captured him boarding a bus, suggesting he had planned his travel.
Authorities traced his last known location to Anandpur Sahib in Punjab’s Nangal region. According to friends, he is believed to have booked the ticket himself, though he had never expressed any intention of travelling there.
Harman’s parents had spoken to him on the same day he went missing, making his sudden disappearance all the more distressing. With no clear indication of his plans or state of mind, the family has been left searching for answers.
Friends noted that the family initially chose not to inform his uncle, Sarabjit Singh, due to concerns about his mental health. However, he later became aware of the situation through social media.
In a dramatic development, Sarabjit Singh allegedly drove a vehicle into the Delhi Assembly complex, breaching security in an attempt to draw attention to his nephew’s disappearance.
Authorities have since taken him into custody, and police are currently verifying his claims regarding the motive behind the act.
Harman’s flatmate had left for his village on March 22, leaving him alone in the apartment. Their last conversation took place on March 30, revolving around routine matters such as arranging a gas cylinder.
Neighbours in Hari Nagar said they would occasionally see him visiting a nearby park with his flatmate but knew little about his personal life. His reserved nature made it difficult for those around him to detect any signs of distress or unusual behaviour.
With limited clues and no clear explanation for his sudden journey, Harman’s disappearance remains a mystery. His case has not only left his family anxious but has also drawn attention due to the unusual sequence of events that followed.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to piece together his movements and determine what led to his disappearance, while his family holds onto hope for his safe return.
