Similar to Game Of Thrones, Denmark has set up a “night watch” in the foreign ministry to monitor US President Donald Trump’s announcements and movements.
The Guardian quoted a report by Politiken newspaper stating that the night watch starts at 5pm (local time) each day and at 7am a report is produced and distributed around the Danish government and relevant departments about what was said and took place.
This comes after a diplomatic row between Denmark and the US over Greenland when Trump threatened to take control of the Arctic island. Though being a self-governing nation, Greenland is part of Denmark.
Earlier this year, Trump had repeated his aspirations to take Greenland. “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if
you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” he added. In response, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told public broadcaster DR that US annexation of Greenland “won’t happen”.
“The direction that Greenland wants to take will be decided by Greenlanders,” he said.
Politiken reported that the initiative to establish a Night Watch was taken by the Danish government to adapt to the new reality of Trump’s second tenure as President.
The foreign office has said that the latest initiative was made as a “collective effort” to stay updated on Trump instead of waiting for any updates from the US.
The Guardian quoted a source as saying: “It is fair to say that the situation in Greenland and the time difference between Denmark and the United States was quite an important factor introducing this arrangement during the spring.”
Jacob Kaarsbo, a former chief analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, said: “Alliances are built on common values and a common threat perception. Trump shares nether of those with us and I would argue he doesn’t share it with most Europeans.”
