Latvia, a small country in Europe, is suffering a drought- not the typical kind; it is a lack of men, leaving Latvian women with no choice but to hire “husbands for an hour” to do household chores, according to The Sun.
According to Eurostat, the country has 15.5% more women than men, which is more than three times the average gap in the European Union.
The gender imbalance becomes even more striking among seniors. As per World Atlas, women aged 65 and above outnumber men by almost two to one. This gap is felt not just in demographics, but also in daily routines, workplaces and social life.
Platforms like Komanda24 have surged in popularity, providing “Men With Golden Hands” who handle tasks like plumbing, carpentry, repairs, and TV mounting, everything
without awkward dating or flirting. Meanwhile, Remontdarbi.lv enables women to hire a “husband for an hour” online or via phone, arriving within 60 minutes to manage chores like painting walls, fixing curtains, or other household activities, filling the emptiness left by the Latvian male scarcity.
Dania, who works at festivals, told The New York Post that most of her colleagues are women. While she enjoys the environment, she admitted that a more balanced gender ratio would make work and social interactions more lively. Her friend Zane said that because “there are just not enough men,” many women travel abroad to find partners.
Experts attribute Latvia’s gender imbalance partly to men’s lower life expectancy, driven by higher smoking rates and lifestyle-related health issues.
“Men are about three times more likely to smoke, with 31% of the male population smoking compared to just 10% of the female population. Men are also slightly more likely to be obese or overweight, with 62% of men being overweight or obese compared to 57% of women,” according to World Atlas.
The trend of renting husbands is not limited to Latvia. In 2022, in the UK, Laura Young went viral after renting her husband, James, for odd jobs to receive additional income.
Their business, “Rent My Handy Husband,” includes general DIY, painting, decorating, tiling, and carpet laying. James, 42, charges $44 per hour or $280 for a whole day, and the service has become so famous that jobs have had to be turned down.
