Legendary Hindi cinema actor Asrani, who captivated audiences for decades with his unforgettable comic timing and versatile roles, passed away on Monday, October 20, leaving a void in the film industry. Although no longer among us, his characters and performances continue to live in the hearts of his fans. Yet, some of his dreams remained unfulfilled at the time of his demise.
According to his manager, Asrani died due to fluid accumulation in his lungs. The news of his passing left his admirers and colleagues in shock. Despite his age, the actor continued to work actively and was part of several upcoming projects. He was scheduled to appear in two major films, including one with actor Akshay Kumar, but destiny intervened before these could reach
cinema halls.
Asrani’s journey in the world of cinema was not easy. In the early years of his career, he faced financial hardships and found it difficult to find work in films. During this period, he took up teaching at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune to support himself. However, his perseverance paid off and he returned to acting, eventually becoming one of the most beloved faces of Hindi cinema.
Throughout his career, Asrani portrayed a wide range of roles, comic, emotional and dramatic, winning the affection of audiences in every avatar. His notable onscreen presence and unforgettable comic flair made him a household name.
In one of his last interviews, given to BBC Hindi, Asrani revealed that he had completed shooting for Priyadarshan’s upcoming film Bhoot Bangla, which also stars Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Tabu. He was also part of another yet-to-be-released film with Akshay Kumar. Sadly, he will not be able to witness his performance on the silver screen.
His sudden departure has left fans grieving not just the loss of an actor, but the stories he had yet to tell. Admirers will forever miss the charm and warmth he brought to cinema. Over the decades, Asrani created memorable characters that will remain etched in film history, a testament to his remarkable talent and dedication to his craft.
