Shubman Gill Becomes 2nd Indian To Lose First Test, ODI And T20I As Captain

Shubman Gill made his ODI captaincy debut for Team India on Sunday (October 19) but suffered a defeat by 7 wickets against Australia. In the rain-hit match played at Optus Stadium in Perth, after being invited to bat first, India could only manage to score 136 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 26 overs and then failed to defend the DLS-adjusted target of 131 runs.

India’s defeat on Sunday entered Gill’s name in an unwanted list. He became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to lose first Test, ODI and T20I as captain.

Gill made his T20I captaincy debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on July 6, 2024, and India went down by 13 runs in that fixture. In Gill’s first Test as captain, India failed to defend the target of 371 runs against England

at Headingley in Leeds and suffered a defeat by five wickets against the Ben Stokes-led side.

Kohli made his ODI captaincy debut against Sri Lanka in Kingston on July 2, 2013, but suffered a defeat by 161 runs. On Kohli’s Test debut, India lost by 48 runs against Australia at Adelaide Oval in December 2014, and in his first T20I as captain, England hammered India by 7 wickets at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on January 26, 2017.

Virender Sehwag was the first Indian to captain in all three formats, and he also won his first match as skipper in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

MS Dhoni won his first Test and T20I as India captain, but his first ODI ended in a draw, and in the second match, India suffered a defeat by 84 runs against Australia in Kochi on October 2, 2007.

Rohit Sharma also suffered defeat in his first ODI as India captain but won the first Test and ODI.

Apart from Sehwag, the only other Indian who won his first Test, ODI and T20I as captain was Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane made his ODI and T20I captaincy debut against Zimbabwe in 2015 and won both of them, and his first Test as captain was against Australia in Dharamsala in February 2017, and India won that contest by 8 wickets.
