The water level of the Mandakini River in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot crossed its highest level in 23 years on Saturday after incessant rainfall triggered severe flooding along the Uttar Pradesh-Madhya Pradesh border.
District Magistrate Pulkit Garg said the river reached 134.02 cm, exceeding the previous record of 134 cm set in 2003 and rising well above the danger mark of 126 cm.
Mandikini River Breaks 23-Year-Old Record
Floodwaters have inundated Ramghat, with shops, temples and monasteries submerged. Several roads have turned into waterways, while boats are being used to evacuate stranded residents. Villages including Taraunha, Gobariya and Bahadur have also reported flooding.

A bridge on the Ramghat-Hanumandhara route was reportedly washed away by strong currents. Traffic has also been suspended on the Jhansi-Mirzapur National Highway 35 after water rose above the Mandakini Bridge in Karvi, resulting in long queues.
The administration has deployed four NDRF, four SDRF and two PAC teams for rescue and relief operations, with additional personnel being mobilised. Food and accommodation have been arranged for displaced residents.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the flood situation and directed officials to ensure that affected people do not face hardship. The state government said rainfall has affected 26 districts, more than 1.71 lakh people and 251 villages. Over 1,000 people have been shifted to shelters and 447 flood outposts established.
No Threat From Nepal Floods: UP Minister
Water Resources Minister Swatantra Dev Singh said Uttar Pradesh faces no threat from the flood situation in Nepal but authorities remain vigilant.
“Before 2017, embankments used to breach, and there was heavy damage. After 2017, all our embankments are safe, and projects are being completed on time,” Singh told PTI.
Authorities are continuing evacuation and relief efforts as the Mandakini remains swollen.
