New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) Approximately 116.6 metric tonnes of waste has been collected and removed from Yamuna ghats in the capital, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Monday.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her cabinet colleagues participated in a cleanliness drive at ghats of the Yamuna here.
“Yamuna is not merely a river, it is the cultural, spiritual, and emotional lifeline of Delhi. For years, conversations around the Yamuna focused on what was wrong. Thousands of Delhiites came together to demonstrate what can be made right when citizens and government work hand in hand,” Singh said.
The government-organised “Maa Yamuna Tat Swachhta Abhiyan”, a mega cleanliness drive, was conducted simultaneously across 28 major Yamuna ghats
in the capital on Sunday.
“The campaign witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 15,000 citizens, volunteers, RWAs, NGOs, community groups, and government officials, transforming the initiative into a people-led movement for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna,” the minister said.
As part of the drive, extensive cleaning operations were carried out at Yamuna ghats, banks, access roads, and adjoining public areas, resulting in the collection and removal of 116.6 metric tonnes of waste, he added.
“The collected waste was carefully segregated and disposed off in accordance with prescribed environmental norms. General garbage and C&D (constructed and demolition) waste were processed through designated channels, while ‘pooja’ (religious) waste and damaged idols were disposed of in an environmentally-compliant manner,” Singh said.
He added that under the campaign, the government deployed eight trash skimmers and weed harvesters, 28 boats with trained operators, 28 JCB machines, 84 PWD maintenance vans, 28 horticulture vehicles for transportation of waste. PTI SSM ARB ARB
