Travelling between Lucknow
and Kanpur is set to become significantly quicker, almost comparable to the duration of a short coffee break. For regular commuters frustrated by long traffic jams and poor road conditions, the near-completion of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway brings major relief. Once operational, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to just 35 to 40 minutes.Currently, the journey typically takes around two hours or more due to congestion and road conditions. The new route promises not only faster connectivity but also improved driving conditions and reduced fuel consumption.
Toll Charges Announced
The National Highways Authority of India has finalised toll rates for the expressway, sparking discussion among commuters.
- One-way journey: Rs 275 for travel between Lucknow and Kanpur
- Same-day return: Rs 415 for a round trip
Despite
the reduced travel time, some travellers feel the toll pricing is on the higher side.
Experts estimate that when toll charges are combined with fuel expenses, a private car journey between the two cities could exceed Rs 1000. This has led to mixed reactions, with some commuters weighing the cost against the time saved.
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to inaugurate the expressway in May. Preparations are underway, and trial runs for vehicles have already begun.
The expressway will be opened to the public soon after the official launch.
Project Cost And Structure
The expressway has been constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 3,600 crore. It has been developed in two main stretches:
- The first section runs from Scooter India in Lucknow to Bani in Banthra
- The second stretch connects Bani to Shuklaganj
Boost To Connectivity And Economy
Officials from the NHAI believe the expressway will mark a major milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure development. Beyond improving connectivity between two major cities, it is expected to enhance trade, ease logistics, and support economic activity in the region.
While many commuters welcome the drastic reduction in travel time, some have raised concerns about the Rs 415 round-trip toll being relatively expensive. However, others argue that the improved road quality, smoother travel, and time savings justify the cost.
With the expressway nearing completion, all eyes are now on how commuters respond once it becomes fully operational. The level of traffic it attracts will ultimately determine whether it becomes the preferred route between Lucknow and Kanpur.
