Just when Drishyam 3 is enjoying a dream run at the box office, the Mohanlal-starrer has found itself at the centre of an unexpected controversy.
A farmer from Kerala’s Idukki district has filed a complaint against the makers of the film, claiming that the registration number used on Georgekutty’s vehicle in Drishyam 3 actually belongs to his own car. The complaint has been submitted to the Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police against producer Antony Perumbavoor, director Jeethu Joseph and the film’s production team.
The complainant, R.D. Rajeev from Kunchithanny, alleges that the vehicle seen in the film carries the registration number KL 69 D 2772, which is registered in his name.
Rajeev said he came to know about the issue after friends who
watched the movie noticed the number and informed him. When he checked, he found that the registration number shown in the film matched his vehicle’s number.
While Rajeev owns a white Mahindra Scorpio, the vehicle featured in the movie is reportedly a different model carrying the same registration number.
The farmer says the film’s popularity has brought him unwanted attention. According to him, people have started calling him “Drishyam Rajeev” and linking his vehicle to the one seen in the movie. He also fears that being associated with a fictional story could create unnecessary problems for him. Rajeev claimed that many people, especially youngsters, now refer to his vehicle as the “Drishyam vehicle”.
As part of his complaint, Rajeev submitted his vehicle registration certificate to prove ownership of the number. He has alleged that the number was used without his permission and said the incident has caused him mental distress.
Rajeev has demanded a public apology from the filmmakers and asked for the scenes featuring the disputed registration number to be removed. He has also requested that screenings of the film be stopped until the matter is resolved.
So far, neither Mohanlal nor the makers of Drishyam 3 have responded publicly to the complaint. Police have confirmed receiving it, but it remains to be seen whether any further action will be taken.
Meanwhile, Drishyam 3 continues to perform strongly in theatres. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film stars Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil and Asha Sharath. The film has reportedly earned ₹236.97 crore worldwide, including ₹125.27 crore in India and ₹111.70 crore overseas. Its India net collection currently stands at ₹107.98 crore from 58,801 shows.
