What is the story about?
While the conflict in West Asia has overshadowed almost all other major developments in the worst, trade, especially India's trade agreement with the United States, remains in focus.
India and the US announced the framework of an interim bilateral trade agreement on February 2, 2026. Since then, the deal has been taking shape, as it leads to implementation.
On Wednesday, while speaking at the Annual Leadership Summit of the American Chamber of Commerce, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that it is a “perfect opportunity” for deeper economic cooperation.
Piyush Goyal said India and the United States can work together to build trusted and resilient global supply chains by combining American innovation and investment with India’s talent and scale.
Speaking about the growing economic partnership between the two countries, Goyal said the current global environment presents a major opening for India and the US to strengthen collaboration across sectors and create dependable supply chains for the future.
Goyal also acknowledged the contribution of US companies and investments in generating employment opportunities in India, appreciating what he described as nearly 10 million jobs created through American businesses operating in the country.
He, however, suggested that the broader economic impact may be significantly larger than official estimates.
Piyush Goyal On Rupee
On the fluctuating state of the Indian Rupee, the Commerce Minister said that India is closely monitoring the recent slide in the rupee, with all arms of the government working in coordination and several measures under consideration, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters, Goyal said there are currently no plans to impose curbs on non-essential imports, though the government has appealed to citizens to reduce spending on import-dependent products to ease pressure on the economy and external balances.
Key US Visits In India
The minister also said that the chief negotiator (United States Trade Representative), Jamieson Greer from the United States, is expected to visit India in June 2026, signalling continued engagement between New Delhi and Washington on trade and economic matters.
Separately, Goyal highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent foreign visit, saying it had been “highly successful” and noted that India received recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation for its agricultural efforts. According to Goyal, the award reflected the contribution and hard work of Indian farmers.
On US Senator Marco Rubio’s upcoming engagements with India, Goyal clarified that Rubio’s meetings would be held with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
