What is the story about?
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited has announced that it has bagged an order worth $227 million, or approximately ₹2,000 crore, for constructing chemical tankers from a European shipowner.
In an exchange filing issued on January 23, the Gujarat-registered defence company said that it has bagged the first newbuild contract for six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each of 18,000 DWT.
Swan's New Order
These tankers will be constructed in the shipyard in Pipavav, Gujarat.
Swan procured this contract from European shipowner Rederiet Stenersen, based in Norway, and is valued at $227 million or above ₹2,000 crore.
The first of these six IMO Type II chemical tankers is slated to be delivered within 33 months, with subsequent deliveries planned at regular intervals. Each tanker will have an overall length of approximately 150 metres and a beam of approx. 23 metres.

These vessels will feature advanced dual-fuel Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-ready hybrid propulsion, and they will also enable multiple operational modes supported by high levels of automation.
The chemical tankers will be designed by Norway-based Marinform AS and StoGda Ship Design & Engineering from Poland.
As per the company, this order is India’s largest single commercial shipbuilding order. In addition, Swan Defence also added that this is the first & the largest chemical tanker order awarded to an Indian shipyard.
MoU With Samsung
Previously, in September 2025, the company had inked an MoU with the Korean giant Samsung Heavy Industries to jointly explore commercial shipbuilding and heavy engineering projects across both domestic and international markets. This pact allows the companies to delve into the making of tankers, gas carriers, container ships, and other specialised ships.
