What is the story about?
Petrol and diesel prices were hiked fourth time in 10 days on Monday, May 25. In this latest tranche of hikes, the price of petrol has been hiked by ₹2.61 per litre. The diesel, meanwhile, has been hiked by ₹2.71 per litre. The hikes are applicable with immediate effect across the country.
During this period, the price of petrol has increased by ₹4.35 per litre, while that of Diesel has been increased by ₹4.53 per litre.
India's oil companies have started to increase prices for the first time in four years. The first tranche of the same came on May 15, and since then, prices have been increased gradually.
In addition to that, the price of CNG has also seen a rise, with the latest round of hike coming on May 23, when the price of retail CNG was hiked by ₹1/kg. Taking the total increase to ₹4/kg, with three hikes in May.
Fuel prices have been raised as the US-Iran war roiled energy markets globally, with Brent crude surging to as high as $126 a barrel before falling below the $100 a barrel mark today, as hopes of a deal between the warring parties rise.
Sources told CNBC-TV18 over the weekend that despite the three price hikes, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are still incurring a loss of ₹38 per litre on diesel and ₹13 per litre on Petrol. Sources claim that although significant under-recoveries are still being absorbed, the May 15 and May 19 price modifications are estimated tohave decreased OMC losses by about 25%, as previously reported.
