At least eight workers were killed and six others injured after molten iron spilled on them at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL)-run Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday, officials told PTI.
"Eight workers were killed, and six others were injured, some of them grievously," an official said, according to PTI.
The accident occurred around 4:15 pm, Visakhapatnam District Collector M Abhishikth Kishore told PTI. The injured workers were shifted to two private hospitals in the city for treatment.
According to police, the incident took place when molten iron being transported in a bucket by a crane spilled onto the workers. The molten metal was at an extremely high temperature of around 1,600 degrees Celsius, officials said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims' families.
"Saddened by the mishap at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest," Modi said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased worker, while those injured would receive ₹50,000.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said he was deeply shocked by the accident and directed officials to coordinate relief and rescue measures.
"I am distressed to learn that several workers have lost their lives in this accident. I have spoken to the concerned officials and directed them to undertake relief measures in coordination with all government departments," Naidu said in a post on X.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also expressed condolences over the incident.
"Shocked to hear this news. Don't have words to condole families of those who have lost their lives in this tragedy. My prayers that those injured have a speedy recovery. Spoke to Secretary, Ministry of Steel to get preliminary details. Condolences," she said in a post on X.
