Tata Steel secures interim relief extension in ₹1,900 crore and ₹2,410 crore demand matters

Homegrown steel major Tata Steel Ltd on Monday (January 12) said the Orissa High Court has extended interim protection in two writ petitions filed by the company against demand notices related to its Sukinda chromite block. The interim relief has been extended until the next date of hearing scheduled for January 19, 2026.

The disclosure follows an earlier intimation dated December 23, 2025, regarding material litigations involving the Sukinda Chromite Block. In the first case, the company had received a demand letter on July 3, 2025, from the Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur, raising a demand of ₹1,902.72 crore.

The demand was linked to a revised assessment of an alleged shortfall in the dispatch of minerals for the fourth year of the Mine Development and Production Agreement, covering the period from July 23, 2023, to July 22, 2024, and an alleged violation of Rule 12-A of the Minerals Concession Rules, 2016.

Tata Steel had filed a writ petition before the Orissa High Court on August 8, 2025, seeking the quashing of the demand. The High Court granted interim protection on August 14, 2025, restraining authorities from taking coercive action, and the protection was extended on multiple occasions up to January 8, 2026.

In the second case, the company received another demand letter on October 3, 2025, raising a demand of ₹2,410.89 crore in connection with an alleged shortfall in the dispatch of chrome ore for the fifth year of the agreement, covering the period from July 23, 2024, to July 22, 2025.

Tata Steel filed a writ petition on October 29, 2025, and the High Court granted interim protection on November 21, 2025, which was subsequently extended till January 8, 2026. Based on order copies made available on January 12, 2026, the Orissa High Court has now further extended interim protection in both matters until January 19, 2026.

Shares of Tata Steel Ltd

ended at ₹183.30, up by ₹4.90, or 2.75%, on the BSE.
