What is the story about?
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, has filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, moving closer to becoming the first company focused on developing frontier AI models to list on the stock market.
The company expects its shares to trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday, October 26. Anthropic had confidentially filed for a listing in June.
The company has not disclosed how much it plans to raise through the IPO.
The proposed listing comes as AI companies face growing funding requirements to develop and operate advanced models. Spending on these efforts continues to weigh on their finances despite rising revenues.
Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.75 billion on revenue of $16.29 billion in the first half of 2026, according to figures disclosed in the filing.
The company has not reported its third-quarter financial results in the filing. Further financial disclosures could emerge in an amended filing before the IPO is priced.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the offering, with 20 other banks also named in the filing.
Anthropic’s potential fundraising could place it among the largest public offerings on record. SpaceX recently raised nearly $86 billion, including the underwriters’ greenshoe option, at an initial valuation of $1.77 trillion, making it the current record-holder for IPO proceeds.
SpaceX shares began trading at $150 apiece, against an IPO price of $135. The stock subsequently fell below the offer price before closing at $147.95 on Friday, October 23.
Anthropic’s IPO preparations also follow those of OpenAI, which filed confidential listing paperwork weeks before Anthropic did so in June. OpenAI has since said it does not expect to go public until 2027.
OpenAI is also reportedly seeking another $30 billion in private-market funding at a valuation of $1.25 trillion.
