Markets recover from volatility, Sensex rises 320 points, Nifty closes above 25,150

The equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty staged a smart recovery after a volatile trading session to end near the day’s high on Tuesday (January 27, supported by gains in banking, metal and select index heavyweights.

The Sensex closed 320 points higher at 81,857, while the Nifty rose 127 points to settle at 25,175, reclaiming the 25,150 level. The Nifty Bank outperformed the broader market, climbing over 1% during the session. The banking index ended up 732 points at 59,205. The Midcap index added 338 points to close at 57,484.

Axis Bank, Adani Enterprises, JSW Steel, Adani Ports and Grasimemerged as the top gainers on the Nifty. Axis Bank jumped 5%, while Tata Consultancy Services rose nearly 3% after reporting its Q3 results. Hindustan Zinc extended gains and climbed 5% as silver prices hit a record high.

Among individual stocks, UltraTech Cement rose 2% after the company reported Q3 results above estimates and reduced debt by ₹1,777 crore on a quarter-on-quarter basis. MCX

surged over 6% following strong Q3 earnings, with F&O turnover rising 82% quarter-on-quarter. Raymondgained over 5%, while Raymond Lifestyle advanced nearly 4% after the companies announced their Q3 results.

On the downside, auto stocks saw pressure amid concerns related to competition from the India–EU free trade agreement. Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business, Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki declined up to 5%. CG Power emerged as the top midcap loser, falling nearly 4% after its Q3 results.

Sona BLW was the top midcap gainer, rising nearly 7% on developments linked to the India–EU FTA. Textile and shrimp stocks jumped up to 12% on expectations around the trade agreement. Market breadth remained neutral, with the NSE advance-decline ratio standing at 1:1.
