Reliance Industries Ltd. and Meta Platforms have announced a significant expansion of their strategic partnership with an agreement for an AI-enabled data center in India. The stock has gained 2% in early trading on Wednesday.
In its statement on Wednesday, June 10, Meta said that the data center will be located in Jamnagar in Gujarat and reaffirms Meta's commitment to India.
As part of the agreement, Reliance Industries will build a data center with a capacity of 168 MW, which will be leased by Meta, with an option to scale.
Meta is leasing capacity at a new Reliance data center in Jamnagar, which will be powered by renewable energy and cooled with desalinated seawater. Meta will cover the full cost of the energy and water supporting the facility, it said in its statement.
The statement also read that Meta has contracted nearly 1 GW of new clean and renewable energy in India through agreements with two clean energy providers, including CleanMax, which will supply 837 MW of new solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka. This takes the cumulative capacity announced with CleanMax to over 900 MW.
“This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation — not just for India, but for the world," Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director at Reliance Industries was quoted as saying.
Meta Platforms had invested over $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms back in 2020, marking the onset of the Reliance - Meta partnership.
The collaboration was extended further with a Joint Venture, bringing Meta's open-source AI models to Indian Enterprises and developers.
"Today’s data center agreement marks the next chapter — extending our partnership to the physical infrastructure powering Meta’s products and AI capabilities in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing digital economies," Meta's statement read.
Shares of Reliance Industries are trading 1.5% higher on Wednesday at ₹1,289. The stock snapped a nine-day losing streak on Tuesday and is among the top contributors to the Nifty 50 gains.
