FIIs sell over ₹7,600 crore in 4 sessions despite turning net buyers on Friday

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net buyers of Indian equities on Friday, purchasing shares worth ₹599.54 crore, according to provisional exchange data. However, the buying came after three consecutive sessions of selling, taking their net outflows over the four sessions from September 15 to September 18 to ₹7,619.69 crore.

FIIs bought equities worth ₹38,461.63 crore and sold shares worth ₹37,862.09 crore on Friday, resulting in net buying of ₹599.54 crore.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) remained net buyers for the fourth straight session, purchasing equities worth ₹1,019.69 crore. They bought shares worth ₹17,310.04 crore and sold ₹16,290.35 crore during the session.

The latest FII data marks a reversal from Thursday, September 17, when foreign investors were net sellers of ₹3,208.76 crore. FIIs bought equities worth ₹8,761.71 crore but sold shares worth ₹11,970.47 crore during the session.

DIIs, meanwhile, continued to provide support to the market on Thursday, with net purchases of ₹3,617.75 crore. They bought shares worth ₹14,105.01 crore and sold ₹10,487.26 crore.

FIIs sell ₹7,620 crore in four sessions; DIIs invest ₹11,232 crore

Over the four trading sessions from September 15 to September 18, FIIs made gross purchases worth ₹73,377.14 crore against gross sales of ₹80,996.83 crore, resulting in net outflows of ₹7,619.69 crore.

DIIs moved in the opposite direction, buying equities worth ₹61,916.62 crore and selling shares worth ₹50,684.90 crore. This translated into net purchases of ₹11,231.72 crore over the four sessions.

FII selling was recorded in three of the four sessions. The highest net outflow came on September 17 at ₹3,208.76 crore, followed by ₹2,977.86 crore on September 15 and ₹2,032.61 crore on September 16. FIIs turned net buyers on September 18, with purchases exceeding sales by ₹599.54 crore.

DIIs, meanwhile, remained net buyers throughout the four sessions, with their strongest buying recorded on September 17 at ₹3,617.75 crore.

Markets end mixed

Indian equity benchmarks ended mixed on Friday, with the Nifty rising for a third straight session and closing above the 23,300 mark for the first time this week. The Nifty gained 76 points to end at 23,346, while the Sensex slipped 20 points to 74,295.

The Nifty Bank rose 303 points to 56,359, while the Nifty Midcap index gained 759 points to 62,191. Market breadth favoured advances, with the advance-decline ratio at around 2:1.

HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance were among the key stocks supporting the Nifty, while TCS and Infosys were the biggest drags on the index.

Tata Group stocks declined amid listing-related news flow, with the group losing around ₹40,000 crore in market capitalisation. Tata Chemicals fell more than 11% after Tata Trusts opposed the listing of Tata Sons.
