Foreign, domestic investors stay bullish as markets start August series higher

Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers of Indian equities on Wednesday, purchasing shares worth ₹2,981.87 crore on a provisional basis.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also extended their buying streak, with provisional net purchases of ₹998.02 crore during the session.

According to exchange data, FIIs bought equities worth ₹17,358.31 crore and sold shares worth ₹14,376.44 crore, resulting in a net inflow of ₹2,981.87 crore.

DIIs, meanwhile, purchased equities worth ₹18,176.22 crore and sold shares worth ₹17,178.20 crore, translating into net buying of ₹998.02 crore, as per provisional exchange data.

The sustained institutional buying supported markets as benchmark indices started the August series on a positive note. The Sensex surged 889 points to close at 77,655, while the Nifty gained 265 points to end at 24,250. Market breadth remained firmly in favour of advances, with broad-based gains across sectors.

The Nifty Bank index rose 450 points to 57,206, while the midcap index advanced 511 points to 62,862. IT stocks continued to witness buying interest, with Infosys gaining 4%, even as global chip stocks faced pressure.

HUL recovered most of Tuesday’s losses and ended 5% higher, while L&T gained over 2% after maintaining its FY27 guidance. Metal stocks also moved higher, with Hindalco, JSW Steel and Tata Steel rising over 2% each.

Among individual movers, Adani Ports declined over 25% despite an in-line Q1 performance, while Adani Enterprises ended 1% higher. Kaynes Technology surged 12%, with other EMS stocks also seeing buying interest.

Swiggy and Eternal continued their upward move, rising up to 6%, while KPIT Technologies gained 6% after delivering better-than-expected Q1 performance. Crompton, Divi’s Laboratories, PG Electroplast, Patanjali and Kalyan Jewellers were among the top midcap gainers.

On the downside, Phoenix Mills slipped 6% after a subdued Q1 performance, while CarTrade closed 5% lower amid profit booking after its results. SML Mahindra surged 20% after the acquisition of Mahindra & Mahindra’s truck and bus portfolio.
