What is the story about?
India and the Netherlands are exploring greater cooperation in semiconductors, green hydrogen, clean energy, maritime infrastructure and advanced manufacturing, as both countries seek to expand trade and investment ties.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal discussed these opportunities during his visit to the Netherlands, including meetings with Dutch ministers, lawmakers and industry officials. He called for combining India's scale, talent and dynamism with Dutch expertise and innovation to strengthen economic ties.
At the India-Netherlands Business Forum, which he attended alongside Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, Goyal highlighted opportunities for collaboration in semiconductors, green hydrogen, water management and resilient infrastructure.
In a bilateral meeting, the two ministers discussed ways to expand trade, strengthen supply chains and attract greater Dutch investment into India's manufacturing, research and development, infrastructure, renewable energy, logistics and digital technology sectors.
The proposed India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) also featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides seeing it as an opportunity to expand market access and unlock fresh trade and investment opportunities.
Goyal also met Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Heleen Herbert to discuss cooperation in semiconductors, green hydrogen, clean energy, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing. The two sides explored ways to increase trade and build more resilient supply chains.
During his interaction with members of the Dutch Parliament, discussions focused on strengthening institutional ties and the potential of the India-EU FTA to improve market access, diversify supply chains and encourage investment.
Goyal also visited the Port of Rotterdam, where he toured the facility aboard a port vessel alongside its CEO, Boudewijn Siemons. Discussions centred on improving logistics efficiency, strengthening supply chain connectivity and exploring opportunities to modernise India's existing ports and develop advanced maritime infrastructure.
In a separate meeting, Goyal and Arthur van Dijk, King's Commissioner for the province of Noord-Holland, explored opportunities to deepen high-technology cooperation between India and the Netherlands.
