Shankh Mitra, an Indian-origin business leader, has become one of the highest-paid CEOs in the US. Mitra was the second-highest-paid CEO among S&P 500 companies in 2025, with a package worth $821 million, according to The Wall Street Journal’s annual ranking. Who is Shankh Mitra?
Shankh Mitra is the Chief Executive Officer of Welltower, a major US real estate company that invests in healthcare properties. He has been in the role since October 2020. He is also a member of Welltower’s Board of Directors.
Born and raised in India, he holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Jadavpur University in Kolkata. Mitra moved to the US and completed an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School.
Mitra began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He then moved into the investment sector and worked as an analyst at Fidelity Investments and later joined Citadel Investment Group. Before joining Welltower, Mitra worked as a Portfolio Manager for Real Estate Securities at Millennium Management, according to Columbia Business School.

Mitra has held several senior positions at Welltower. He served as the company’s Chief Investment Officer from August 2018 to January 2023. He also worked as Vice Chair – Chief Operating Officer and Chief Investment Officer, Head of Investments, and in senior finance and investment roles.
Mitra also serves on the Board of Trustees of Public Storage. He is also a member of the Nareit Advisory Board of Governors. In addition to this, he is a trustee of UT Southwestern Medical Center and serves as a member of its President’s Advisory Board.
Mitra's $821 million compensation was largely made up of stock awards rather than cash salary. About 99% of his total compensation came from shares. In October, he was awarded shares worth about $789 million.
By the end of 2025, the shares linked to that award were worth more than $1 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
