China export growth rises, widening trade surplus amid AI boom

China's export growth has accelerated, and its trade surplus has expanded, coinciding with the United States increasing pressure on Beijing to rectify trade imbalances just weeks before the leaders of the world's largest economies convene in Washington.

As per a Bloomberg report, in August, exports surged by 25% compared to the same month last year, up from a nearly 24% increase in July, according to data released by China's General Administration of Customs on Tuesday.

Imports increased by 28.2%, falling short of expectations, resulting in a trade surplus of $119.1 billion.

Following a record surplus of $1.2 trillion last year, China is on track for a similar outcome in 2026, driven by the global AI infrastructure expansion that is boosting trade throughout Asia.

The continuous rise in exports is creating imbalances and escalating tensions with trade partners who are concerned that China's manufacturing supremacy within the global value chain is undermining their own industries.

The United States is intensifying its rhetoric against China, advocating for increased domestic demand and a reduction in reliance on exports for economic growth, just prior to Chinese leader Xi Jinping's meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House later this month. The two nations have maintained a delicate tariff truce that is set to expire in November unless it is renewed.

Tensions are also escalating between Beijing and Brussels as the October deadline approaches to address imbalances that EU leaders increasingly view as a strategic challenge.

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticised China for obstructing a Group of 20 meeting of finance ministers from issuing a joint statement urging nations with "excessive and persistent external surpluses" to "eliminate distortions." In response, Beijing rejected the accusation, with the Ministry of Commerce characterising the US actions as an effort to rationalise protectionism and contain China.

Severe weather conditions led to interruptions in shipping activities during August. Significant ports in eastern China halted their operations as typhoons drew near. Official statistics indicate that cargo throughput at China's ports declined weekly throughout the previous month compared to the preceding seven days.

Although trade volumes are increasing, the rise in prices is significantly enhancing the value of exports this year. With trillions of dollars being invested in AI, a shortage of semiconductors and other electronic components has resulted in some chip prices skyrocketing by as much as 700% over the last year.

According to projections by S&P Global Ratings, volume growth at China's ports is anticipated to rise by approximately 5% this year.
