Apar Industries Q1: Stock cools 6% from highs despite all round beat, multi-quarter high margins

Shares of Apar Industries jumped more than 9% after the company reported a strong set of earnings for the quarter ended June, with consolidated net profit rising 77.8% year-on-year to ₹467.5 crore from ₹262.9 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The stock, however, gave up most of those gains soon after.

Revenue from operations increased 29.1% to ₹6,591.1 crore from ₹5,104.2 crore a year ago.

The company's operating performance also improved sharply during the quarter. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 67.8% year-on-year to ₹758 crore from ₹452 crore, while EBITDA margin expanded to 11.5% from 9% in the year-ago period. Margins were the highest in at least 17 quarters,

Profit before tax climbed to ₹622.6 crore from ₹352.5 crore a year earlier. Current tax expense stood at ₹182.1 crore, while deferred tax reflected a credit of ₹27 crore during the quarter.

Among business segments, the conductors business generated revenue of ₹3,338.1 crore, while transformer and specialty oils contributed ₹1,700.9 crore and power/telecom cables reported revenue of ₹1,838.1 crore during the quarter.

The transformer and specialty oils segment posted the greatest improvement in segment profit, rising to ₹331.3 crore from ₹97.8 crore a year earlier.

Separately, the board approved the incorporation of a wholly owned subsidiary in the United Kingdom to engage in the trading of conductors, optical ground wire (OPGW), rods, and cables. It also approved an additional investment of up to BRL 3 million in its Brazilian subsidiary, Apar Industries Latam Ltda.

After making an intraday high of ₹14,685, shares of Apar Industries gave up those gains and are now trading 2.8% higher at ₹13,796. The stock is still up 65% so far this year.
