The equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended sharply higher on Wednesday (July 29), kicking off the August derivatives series on a positive note as broad-based buying lifted equities across sectors.
The BSE Sensex advanced 889 points to close at 77,655, while the Nifty 50 gained 265 points to settle at 24,250, ending firmly above the 24,200 level. Market breadth remained in favour of advancing stocks, indicating broad-based participation in the rally.
The Nifty Bank index rose 450 points to 57,206, while the Nifty Midcap index climbed 511 points to 62,862.
1. IT stocks extend gains
Information technology stocks remained in demand, with Infosys rising 4%. Technology shares continued to attract buying even as chip-related stocks declined. KPIT Technologies also gained 6% after reporting quarterly results that were better than expectations.
2. Metals, banks and FMCG stocks support the rally
Metal stocks witnessed strong buying interest, with Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel and Tata Steel gaining more than 2% each.
Consumer goods major Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL) recovered most of the losses seen on Tuesday and ended the session 5% higher. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) rose more than 2% after maintaining its guidance for FY27.

Buying extended beyond large-cap stocks, with the midcap index posting a strong gain. Among individual movers, Kaynes Technology jumped 12%, while other electronics manufacturing services (EMS) stocks also advanced. Swiggy and Eternal gained as much as 6% each.
Among midcaps, Crompton, Divi's Laboratories, PG Electroplast, Patanjali, and Kalyan Jewellers were among the top gainers. On the downside, Phoenix Mills declined 6% after subdued first-quarter performance. CarTrade Tech ended 5% lower following profit booking after its quarterly results.
Among notable stock-specific moves, SML Isuzu surged 20% following the acquisition of Mahindra & Mahindra's truck and bus portfolio, while Adani Enterprises gained 1%. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone slipped despite reporting an in-line first-quarter performance.
From the Sensex basket, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Infosys Ltd, Hindalco Industries Ltd, Trent Ltd, Larsen & Toubro Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd and Bharti Airtel Ltd were the major gainers.
