What is the story about?
Oil India has moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to carry out oil exploration and drilling beneath Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Assam, arguing that the project could help strengthen India’s energy security amid volatile global crude prices and the crisis in West Asia.
The company filed its plea on Tuesday, November 3. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the matter and sought a response from the Centre.
Oil India said India imports around 80-85% of its crude oil requirements, leaving it vulnerable to price swings and supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions.
It also highlighted the region’s hydrocarbon reserves, saying they account for around 3% of India’s total hydrocarbon reserves.
Oil India challenges environment ministry’s decision
Oil India is challenging the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s rejection of its proposal to divert 0.069 hectares of forest land for the project.
The company has argued that the Supreme Court’s restrictions on mining activities in forest areas do not extend to oil drilling. It has sought permission to proceed with the proposed exploration beneath the national park.
The matter will be considered further after the Centre submits its response.
