What is the story about?
Volvo Buses India, on Wednesday, announced to have won an order for 200 Volvo 9600 coaches from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), making it the company’s largest-ever order for Volvo buses in India.
The order includes 170-seater coaches and 30 sleeper coaches, which will be deployed on intercity and inter-state routes in Maharashtra.
The Volvo 9600 coaches are manufactured at Volvo Buses India’s facility in Hoskote. The seater version has a 51-seat layout, with seats equipped with calf support, while the sleeper version is designed for overnight travel.
The coaches are built with a focus on safety, ride quality and reliability for intercity operations, claims the company.
MSRTC expansion
The order expands Volvo’s existing partnership with MSRTC as the state transport operator works to upgrade its intercity bus services. The induction is also part of efforts to improve passenger comfort and safety across the state-run network.
Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President – Bus Division, VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd., said, “This landmark order reflects our shared commitment to elevating travel and making premium passenger experiences more accessible for the citizens of Maharashtra.”
The 200-coach order is the single-largest order for Volvo buses in India. It comprises two Volvo 9600 configurations, giving MSRTC options for both regular intercity services and overnight routes.
