Air India is set for a crucial board meeting on May 7 in Gurgaon, where the airline’s financial performance, cost-cutting measures and leadership transition are expected to dominate discussions, sources told CNBC-TV18.
According to sources, the airline is projecting losses of more than ₹22,000 crore for FY26, prompting the management to examine multiple cost-control measures as operating pressures intensify.
The meeting will be chaired by Tata Sons Chairman and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran. Outgoing Air India CEO Campbell Wilson is also expected to attend.
Nomination committee to discuss salaries, increments and bonuses
Separately, Air India’s Nomination and Remuneration Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss employee-related payouts, including staff salaries, annual increments and bonus payments, sources said.
The deliberations come at a time when the airline is under pressure to rein in expenses amid rising losses and operational challenges.
Cost-saving measures under consideration
Sources said the board is likely to review several proposals aimed at reducing costs without directly affecting flight operations.
Among the measures being discussed is the unbundling of meals from ticket pricing. Under the proposal, passengers who do not wish to opt for onboard meals may be offered lower fare categories.
Another proposal being considered is giving business class passengers the option to choose lounge access separately instead of automatically bundling it with premium fares.
The airline has already been facing pressure from elevated jet fuel prices, airspace restrictions and increased operating costs on international routes. This has also forced the carrier to trim its international operations.
CEO selection process on agenda
The selection of Air India’s next CEO is also expected to figure prominently during the meeting.
As per Reuters, former Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan and Air India Express Chairman Nipun Aggarwal are among the contenders being considered for the role.
Campbell Wilson, who led Air India through a major transformation phase following the Tata Group takeover, is expected to step down after the transition process is completed.

Sources further indicated that N Chandrasekaran is likely to address Air India employees at a townhall on May 8.
