India is positioning itself to take a leadership role in the global 6G race, with the government aiming to secure a 10% share of worldwide patents in the next generation of telecom technology, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told CNBC in an exclusive interview.
Speaking on India’s long-term telecom roadmap, Scindia said the country is firmly on track in its 6G journey and has already built a strong global collaboration framework through the Bharat 6G Alliance. “6G, we’re on track. The Bharat 6G Alliance has tied up with close to about 10 such networks across the world, ranging from the US to Korea to Europe, pretty much to Africa,” he said.
The minister said India’s ambition is not just to adopt the technology early but to play a decisive role in shaping global standards. According to Scindia, the government’s objective is for Indian entities to contribute 10% of global 6G patents when standards are formalised by international bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3GPP. “Our aim is to be able to contribute 10% of patents to 6G when the rules get put in place by ITU and 3GPP,” he said.

Scindia added that the Bharat 6G Alliance is working across seven verticals covering different technology streams, with progress being reviewed at the ministerial level every quarter. He said this structured approach is designed to ensure that India remains ahead of the curve as global discussions on 6G standards gather pace.
Drawing a contrast with earlier technology cycles, Scindia said India’s approach to 6G marks a clear shift in ambition. “We walked behind the world on 4G, we walked with the world on 5G, we will lead the world on 6G,” he said, underlining the government’s confidence in the country’s research, innovation and manufacturing ecosystem.
