What is the story about?
Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries
, has broken into the top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) latest Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings, becoming the only Indian technology company to feature among the world's top patent applicants.
The company climbed 320 places in the 2025 rankings to secure the 20th position, placing it alongside global technology giants such as Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft, according to a company statement released on Saturday.
The sharp rise comes at a time when global PCT filings grew by less than 1%, highlighting Jio's accelerating pace of innovation and intellectual property creation.
Jio said its patent portfolio is concentrated on next-generation technologies including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access networks, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.
"The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company," Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms, said in the statement.
He said the achievement reflected the company's innovation capabilities across advanced technologies and aligned with India's ambition of becoming a creator and exporter of technology.
The WIPO ranking is regarded as a key indicator of research and development productivity and intellectual property strength. Jio said the recognition highlights the growing presence of India-origin innovation in the global technology landscape.
As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms had filed 6,817 patents globally, including 2,393 in India and 4,424 in overseas jurisdictions. The company has secured 1,009 patent grants worldwide, comprising 538 in India and 471 in international markets.
The company said it is also developing emerging technologies such as 5G and 6G radio systems, 5G and 6G core networks, satellite communications and its Agentic AI platform, JioBrain, which it expects to contribute to future growth in its intellectual property portfolio.
The latest ranking marks a significant milestone for Jio and reflects a broader shift in India's technology sector from large-scale technology adoption to original technology creation.
