Financials help lift markets off lows; over 30 Nifty stocks still end in red

The stock market ended lower on Tuesday but trimmed most of their intraday losses as a late recovery in financials and strength in broader markets helped stabilise sentiment, even as more than half of Nifty 50 constituents closed in the red.

The Nifty 50 fell 121 points to 25,840, while the Sensex dropped 436 points to 84,666, paring deeper losses from earlier in the session. Despite the benchmark decline, market breadth was strongly positive, with the NSE advance–decline ratio at 2:1, reflecting broad-based buying outside the headline indices.

The Nifty Bank closed nearly flat, down just 16 points at 59,222 as financial stocks recovered from lows. The outperformance in the broader market continued, with the Midcap index rising 188 points to 59,676, extending its relative strength trend.

Among stocks, Kaynes Technology surged 16%, snapping a four-day losing streak after a positive brokerage note. Delhivery gained nearly 5% after launching ‘Delhivery International’ aimed at supporting MSME exporters. Ajmera Realty climbed 4% after the developer reported collections of over ₹400 crore from a project in 24 hours, while RateGain rose 2% after its UNO booking engine integrated with PayU.

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) recovered sharply from early losses after the CEO said operations had stabilised. Vodafone Idea also advanced 4%, recouping Monday’s decline, while most real estate stocks clawed back roughly half of the previous session’s losses, with Godrej Properties up 3%.

On the downside, Coforge slipped 4% after signalling that tech spending in 2026 could be weaker than in 2025. Hero MotoCorp fell 3% after UBS flagged market-share losses in the first week of December. JSW Energy eased 1% following block deals amounting to nearly 1% of equity, and Solarworld rose 3% after winning an ₹806-crore project from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam.

Capital-market-linked stocks were under pressure amid volatility, with the BSE Capital Goods index down 3%.
