What is the story about?
The Centre, on Saturday, exempted all customs duties on cotton imports from June 1 to October 30, 2026, to increase cotton availability for the domestic textile sector.
The decision was notified by the Finance Ministry, under notification no. 19/2026-Customs, cotton imported under tariff heading 5201 will be exempt from customs duty and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess during the specified period.
The government said the temporary exemption is intended to improve the supply of cotton to the textile industry.
It said the move is expected to lower input costs across the textile and apparel sector, providing relief to manufacturers and consumers while keeping the interests of domestic cotton growers in mind.
The government added that the measure is likely to support the domestic textile industry, particularly small and medium enterprises, by improving cotton availability in the market.
