What is the story about?
Indian equity markets have wiped out over ₹8 lakh crore of shareholder wealth on Wednesday, October 21, as the markets extended their sell-off from Monday's trading session, and have given up more than half of the recovery that was seen from the 2026 lows of 22,180 earlier this month.
The Nifty 50 index is down over 200 points, the Sensex too, has declined over 500 points. But the real pain lies in the broader markets today. The Nifty Midcap Index is down over 2%, while the Smallcap index has corrected nearly 3% on Wednesday.
91 stocks on the Midcap index and 94 stocks on the Smallcap index are trading with losses. 453 Nifty 500 constituents are trading with losses on Wednesday. Even 40 Nifty 50 constituents are trading with losses.
Here are some factors why the stock markets could have seen a sharp fall on Wednesday:
Something that was very likely to be a dampener in sentiment with Brent Crude at one point having surged to as high as $112 a barrel before cooling off on Tuesday. Current prices too, are trading close to $100 a barrel.
Higher crude prices are negative for the markets as India is a large importer of crude oil.
While bond yields in the US have cooled off from multi-year highs but still remain above the mark of 5%, India's own bond yields are surging and at 7.43% for the 10-year note, the yields were at the highest level since 2023.
The rising bond yields are negative for the PSU Banks and majority of those lenders are trading with losses in today's session.
Result reactions have not been very well received so far in today's session. Bajaj Finance is among the top Nifty 50 losers, declining over 3.5% after its results, while broader market names like Himadri Specialty Chemicals, and Jindal Saw, which reported results on Friday and declined sharply on Monday, are extending their losses.
Himadri Specialty Chemicals is down another 10% on Wednesday, while Jindal Saw is down another 8%. Other results such as Gallant Ispat, Waaree Renewables Tech, are also seeing a negative reactions to their results.
Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities said that the 22,670 - 22,690 level will be a crucial support for the index, while 22,980 - 23,000 will be a resistance. In case the Nifty slips below that support zone, then the next level of support emerges only at 22,500 - 22,520 zone.
