What is the story about?
As India and the United States move closer to finalising an interim trade agreement, US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer has said the two countries are looking beyond traditional trade and towards deeper cooperation in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Greer's remarks come days after India and the US concluded another round of negotiations in New Delhi, where officials reviewed progress on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) covering market access, digital trade, supply-chain resilience, non-tariff barriers and strategic sectors. Both sides are aiming to conclude an interim deal before current US tariff arrangements expire on July 24.
In an interview in New Delhi, Greer said India's growing technology ambitions present significant opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
"We know that India has a long history of agriculture and manufacturing, but we also know that they're moving forward in technology," Greer said. "They want to move forward in AI. They want to cooperate and collaborate with the United States on the technologies of the future and trade of the future."
The comments underscore Washington's broader vision for the relationship at a time when negotiators are said to be closing in on an interim trade pact.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently said both countries were "fast moving towards closing all the open ends" of the agreement, while US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated that only a small portion of the negotiations remains unresolved.
Greer also highlighted the role of political engagement in driving economic ties.
"President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have an amazing relationship. They've nurtured it over many years," he said, referring to the leaders' recent meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France.
According to Greer, the leaders agreed to "take the relationship to the next level", with the ongoing trade negotiations forming one part of a broader effort to expand cooperation across technology, investment and strategic sectors.
"This includes the trade deal that we're working on, but it includes every aspect of the relationship," he said, adding that US-India ties are expected to continue strengthening in the weeks ahead.
