Bharat coking coal raw coal production rises in March, offtake falls 24%; Shares gain 7%

Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) reported a 2% rise in raw coal production to 4.42 million tonne (MT) in March 2026 from the previous year, according to its provisional monthly performance data released on Wednesday, April 1.

Coking coal production, which forms the bulk of BCCL’s output, increased 3.6% to 4.22 MT, compared with 4.07 MT in the same month last year. However, non-coking coal production declined sharply by 22.9% to 0.20 MT from 0.26 MT a year ago.

Despite higher production, coal offtake (raw

coal) fell significantly by 24.4% YoY to 2.66 MT, compared with 3.52 MT in March 2025.

On the mining front, output from opencast mines rose 2.9% to 4.31 MT, while underground mine production declined 23.5% to 0.11 MT during the month.

Washed coking coal production saw a 17.5% increase to 0.17 MT, up from 0.14 MT in the year-ago period. Meanwhile, overburden removal declined 24.3% to 12.21 million cubic metre from the previous year.

For the full financial year 2026, BCCL reported a 12.3% decline in raw coal production to 35.52 MT, compared with 40.50 MT in the previous year. Coking coal output fell 13.4% to 33.70 MT, while the total offtake dropped 13.6% to 33.05 MT.

The company said the data is provisional and subject to revision.

Earlier in the day, the company’s shares rose about 4% after it announced a revision in the modulated prices of coking coal and washed coal products. The revision, effective April 1, 2026, is based on WPI indexation, reflecting a 0.24% increase over the past year.

Shares of Bharat Coking Coal were trading more than 7% up at ₹32.05 as of 2.04 pm. The stock has declined by over 21% in the last six months.
