What is the story about?
India's Geographical Indication (GI) products are set for a new market-access push, with the government planning to bring GI collectives and authorised users onto the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Government e-Marketplace (GeM) under a dedicated "Bharat GI" banner.
As of July 22, 2025, India had 658 registered Indian Geographical Indications, according to government data.
Of these, 365 were handicraft products, 218 agricultural products, 50 foodstuff, 22 manufactured products and three natural products.
Under the latest initiative, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will facilitate the onboarding of GI collectives and authorised users onto ONDC and GeM under the "Bharat GI" banner.
The two organisations will also work towards integrating the One District One Product (ODOP) programme into their programme design and interventions.
They will also co-sponsor dedicated GI Pavilions at national and international trade expos, buyer-seller meets and exhibitions for domestic and global marketing of GI products.

The government said the initiative will cover commercialisation, quality standardisation and market penetration of Indian GI products.
It said the measures will enhance the livelihoods of indigenous artisans, weavers and producers and strengthen the ODOP ecosystem.
The collaboration will also facilitate capacity building and digital enablement for artisans, weavers and producer collectives, and support the integration of GI products with premium domestic and international markets, according to the government.
DPIIT is the nodal department for the registration and legal protection of Geographical Indications in India under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, while the Ministry of MSME is the nodal ministry for the growth, financial health and overall development of MSMEs, traditional industries and artisans.
The government said the initiative will align DPIIT's intellectual property protection mandate with MSME's enterprise development role and strengthen India's GI ecosystem.
