Nippon Life India AMC shares gain 3% after Nomura, Jefferies say 'buy'; Here's why HSBC is cautious

Shares of Nippon Life India Asset Management Ltd. (NAM AMC) gained as much as 3% on Tuesday, September 1, after the company's analyst day, following which, analysts who track the company shared divergent views on its prospects.

While Nomura and Jefferies maintained their "buy" ratings on the stock, HSBC has a cautious stance and therefore has a "hold" rating on the asset manager.

HSBC on NAM AMC

HSBC maintained its Hold rating on NAM AMC with a target price of ₹1,090, implying a downside of around 7% from Monday's close.

The brokerage said management remains focused on continued investments in distribution and branding to increase its customer base and wallet share.

NAM AMC is also looking to expand in B-100 cities and leverage digital partnerships as growth accelerators, while scaling up its non-mutual fund business remains a focus, HSBC said.

However, HSBC believes the stock's premium valuation is well supported by its fundamentals, thereby limiting the scope for further rerating.

Nomura on NAM AMC

Nomura maintained its "buy" rating on the stock with a target price of ₹1,230, implying an upside of nearly 5% from Monday's close.

The brokerage said NAM AMC remains focused on absolute earnings growth and profitable scale rather than pursuing market share at any cost.

Its customer franchise provides a strong base for AUM compounding as the mutual fund industry expands. NAM AMC had 40.2 million folios and 24.1 million unique investors as of June 2026, representing 39% of India's mutual fund investor base, Nomura said.

The brokerage also highlighted HNI share gains, MFD-led distribution and a maturing digital ecosystem as factors supporting participation in both active and passive segments.

Jefferies on NAM AMC

Jefferies retained a "buy" rating on the stock with a target price of ₹1,320, implying an upside of around 13% from Monday's close.

The brokerage said the analyst day focused on the factors that could sustain NAM AMC's performance going forward.

NAM AMC's funds have consistently remained within the top or upper-middle tiers, which the company attributed to processes that reduce key-person dependence and prioritise long-term returns.

The company is also increasing its focus on smaller B-30 markets, where it has a 10% share, through one-man operations and investments in digital channels, Jefferies said.

Among the 26 analysts that cover the stock, 20 have a "buy" rating, five say "hold", and one has a "sell" rating on the stock. The consensus 12-month target price stands at ₹1,256.92, implying an upside of around 7% from Monday's closing price.

Shares of Nippon Life India Asset Management Company are trading 1.5% higher on Tuesday at ₹1,189.9. The stock is up 32% over the last six months.
