What is the story about?
Uber’s outgoing India and South Asia head Prabhjeet Singh will be joining OpenAI, people familiar with the matter told CNBC-TV18 on Friday evening.
OpenAI later confirmed the development, saying Singh will come on board as its Managing Director for India in September.
In a statement to CNBC-TV18, OpenAI said Singh will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region, and will be the company’s most senior leader in India.
He will be responsible for OpenAI’s performance across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations.
His focus will include building partnerships and supporting India’s wider AI ecosystem, while helping more consumers, businesses, institutions and government bodies benefit from AI, the company said.
OpenAI described the appointment as part of its continued investment in India, which it called one of its top priority markets.
Confirming his exit, an Uber spokesperson told CNBC-TV18: “India is one of Uber’s most important markets globally, an important driver of innovation and long-term growth. The strength of our business today reflects the incredible team and foundation built over the years. We thank Prabhjeet for his leadership and lasting contributions in his decade-long journey with Uber - we remain deeply committed to our next phase of growth in India.”
Singh has spent roughly a decade at Uber, most recently serving as President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
He joined the company in 2015 from McKinsey, where he was an Associate Partner, and was elevated to the India and South Asia presidency in 2021.
During his tenure he was credited with adapting Uber’s global model to local conditions and driving India-first innovations such as Auto, Moto and Uber Shuttle.
Singh is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.
His appointment is the latest in a series of senior hires as OpenAI accelerates its India expansion, having drawn leadership talent from firms including Meta, Netflix, Google, AWS and Intel, alongside planned offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
He was appointed President of the region in 2020 and oversaw strategy across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
