Qatar’s prime minister visited Tehran on Thursday in an effort to revive stalled diplomacy six months into the war, as US President Donald Trump said Washington was not currently talking to Iran. Six months after US and Israeli forces attacked Iran, killing its supreme leader and maiming his son and successor, the Iranian government is under economic siege, but it still holds power and has shown little urgency to negotiate.

Oil prices rose on Thursday August 28 as diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz ran into fresh obstacles, raising doubts over whether energy flows through one of the world's most important corridors could sustainably increase. Brent crude for October delivery traded near $90 in thin trading ahead of the contract's expiry, while the more actively traded November contract closed below $89. West Texas Intermediate climbed 1.6% to $84 a barrel.

The death toll from the massive flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border rose to 392 on Thursday, as rescuers raced to find hundreds still missing, including 290 Indian nationals. US President Donald Trump has offered "any help" Nepal needs and said the US is sending aids. "We've called Nepal, and we've offered any help that they need. We have a very good relationship with Nepal, and that was brutal... Nobody's ever seen anything quite like that... strong, well-built buildings were wiped out like they were toothpicks. That's a terrible thing," he said.

The Indian currency opened at 95.51 per US dollar, compared with Thursday's (August 27) close of 95.54. The week started on a positive note for the currency, as on Monday, the rupee had opened at 95.64 against the US dollar.
