NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd., a wholly owned unit of NTPC Green Energy Ltd., has signed a green ammonia purchase agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India for supply under the Indian government’s clean hydrogen programme, the company announced on Tuesday, March 31. The agreement, signed on March 30, involves the supply of 70,000 metric tonnes per annum of green ammonia to Krishna Phoschem Limited with SECI as an intermediary procurer. The deal falls under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen
Transition (SIGHT) scheme of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at boosting production and adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The scheme was launched in 2023. "This agreement marks a significant milestone in NGEL’s Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia portfolio and reinforces its commitment towards India’s decarbonization goals," NTPC Renewable Energy said in a statement.
NTPC has been eyeing opportunities in the green hydrogen space for a while now. In 2023, it was among the first companies to commission India's first green hydrogen blending project along with Gujarat Gas Ltd. in Surat.
Last week, the state-owned company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nxtra Data Limited to supply round-the-clock renewable energy to their data centres across the country.
