Jan Samarth completes four years: A look at its journey in digital credit delivery

India's Jan Samarth portal, a government-backed digital platform for accessing credit-linked schemes, has completed four years of operations, having processed loan applications worth more than ₹3 lakh crore since its launch in June 2022.

According to a Finance Ministry background note, the portal had processed around 54.1 lakh applications involving over ₹3 lakh crore as of June 1.

Banks had digitally approved 49.55 lakh applications worth nearly ₹2.76 lakh crore, stressing the growing adoption of digital channels for accessing institutional credit.

Launched on June 6, 2022, Jan Samarth was designed as a single-window platform that connects borrowers with lenders and simplifies access to government-supported credit schemes. The portal enables users to check eligibility, identify suitable schemes and submit loan applications through an integrated digital process.

The platform currently covers 16 credit-linked Central government schemes spanning agriculture, housing, entrepreneurship, renewable energy and livelihood generation. These include schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Kisan Credit Card, PM SVANidhi, Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, Agri Clinics and Agri Business Centres Scheme, rooftop solar financing and housing loans for economically weaker and middle-income groups.

To widen accessibility, the portal is available in eight languages — English, Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali and Kannada. It also operates round the clock and supports assisted-mode applications through business correspondents and partner institutions.

Jan Samarth has onboarded 269 lending institutions, including public sector and private sector banks, regional rural banks, non-banking financial companies, small finance banks and cooperative banks.

The platform integrates with several government and financial databases, including Aadhaar, Udyam, AgriStack, GST and income tax systems, allowing real-time verification of applicant information and faster processing of loan requests. According to the government, the objective is to reduce procedural hurdles and improve access to formal credit, particularly for entrepreneurs, farmers, small businesses and livelihood seekers.

As the portal enters its fifth year, the government says Jan Samarth continues to serve as a technology-driven credit delivery platform aimed at expanding financial inclusion and improving access to institutional finance across the country.
