Budget 2026 tightens rules: One-day delay in tax audit report may cost ₹75,000
The Union Budget 2026–27, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha on Sunday (February 1), proposed a much stricter regime for delays in filing tax audit reports under the proposed Income-tax Act, 2025. The Finance Bill, 2026 introduces a graded and mandatory fee structure under proposed Section 428, replacing the earlier discretionary penalty system with fixed monetary charges. Under the new rules, even a one-day delay in submitting a tax audit report will attract a fee of ₹75,000, marking a sharp escalation in compliance costs.
