What is the story about?
The pre-open session in the Futures & Options segment will begin on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) starting today, December 8. The announcement of the same was made last month, on November 4.
Starting today, the pre-open session will be held between 9 AM to 9:15 AM, as is the trend in the cash markets as well.
Here are the details you should know:
The NSE has also clarified that the random closure of the equity segment pre-open and the F&O segment pre-open will be independent from each other.
Between 9:12 AM to 9:15 AM, there will be the transition from the pre-open to a continuous trading session.
The pre-open session will be applicable for the current months futures contracts only for both the single stocks and indices. However, in the last five trading days before the current monthly expiry, the session will be extended to next month's futures contracts as well.
For example, the pre-open session will be applicable to December futures from the starting date, but not to the January futures. The pre-open session for the January futures will be applicable only from December 23, 2025.

- Between 9 AM and 9:08 AM, there will be order entry, modifications and cancellations. There will also be a system driven random closure between the 7th and the 8th minute of the pre-open session.
The NSE has also clarified that the random closure of the equity segment pre-open and the F&O segment pre-open will be independent from each other.
- Between 9:08 AM to 9:12 AM, order matching period begins after completion of the order entry period. This four-minute window will also see determination of the opening price, as well as order matching and trade confirmation.
Between 9:12 AM to 9:15 AM, there will be the transition from the pre-open to a continuous trading session.
